Looking over on Suze Weinberg's blog I saw that she had covered a mirror with beeswax. Well having a couple of those Ikea mirrors hanging about, taking up room, decided to have a play.
My mirror was black, so put on a couple of coats of trad tan, four coats of beeswax, then pushed in different sizes of cookie cutters. Then time to play, added loads of different colours of alcohol inks. dropped it on the wax then, gently at first, took off with paper towels, kept adding different colours and sometimes took off the colour underneath, sometimes left it on. Really enjoyed doing it, and like the effect.
I put it on the wall to take a photo and my husband walked passed and asked what it was. I said a mirror, and he replied that the mirror bit was far too small, he wouldn't be able to see to shave, I said, it's just a work of art, at which point he roared with laughter and said, but it's not practical......the philistine, see what I'm up against.
wow so fab. i have a few of these mirrors too .must try this xxx

I saw this on Suze's blog too, I've never worked with wax, but the effect is brilliant. I love what you have done here - but men, eh!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right about what a pain mounting those PBS stamps was, horrid job!! Hope to see what you do with yours soon!
Fab colours - bet it's so much more stunning in real life. Gorgeous work. I'm not a beeswax fan but I do like this.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried this technique but love the look, it seems to make colours even more vibrant. I think your mirror is stunning and had to smile at your husband's comment. I took home an altered book from a workshop once and mine wanted to know what the point was!
ReplyDeleteoh Anne how we have to suffer with our other halves, its too much for a crafter to bear somethimes LOL. I picked one off those mirrors up from charity shop the other day for 50p, was gonna put in sons room, but have already been tempted by Tims version with fragments and now this. I m feeling the need for a trip to Ikea, havent been for yonks cos its such a drama when you get there, mmhh gonna speak to OH, have a good week :)
